During his medical education and ophthalmology residency, he trained internationally at <strong>Louisiana State University School of Medicine<\/strong> in the United States, <strong>St\u00e4dtisches Klinikum Kemperhof Koblenz<\/strong> in Germany, and The Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College in the United Kingdom.<\/p><p>In <strong>2007<\/strong>, he obtained equivalency from the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom and became eligible to practice medicine with Full Medical Registration. In <strong>2012<\/strong>, he fulfilled his compulsory service at K\u0131rklareli State Hospital. In <strong>2016<\/strong>, he was awarded the title of <strong>Associate Professor<\/strong> in the field of Ophthalmology.<\/p><p>In <strong>2017<\/strong>, he completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at <strong>Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i University<\/strong> with a GPA of 4.0. As a result of his research at the Biomedical Engineering Laboratory of Bo\u011fazi\u00e7i University, R\u0131fat Rasier developed a method that enables corneal incisions made during cataract surgery to be sealed using laser welding at the end of the operation.<\/p><p>In current cataract surgeries, incisions are typically left open or sutured at the end of the procedure. Through laser tissue welding experiments, successful results were achieved in closing these incisions without sutures using laser technology. With this system, tissue can be welded and sealed from a distance of 2 millimeters without direct contact, using a specific wavelength. Prof. Dr. Berkay Akmaz was born in \u0130zmir in <strong>1985<\/strong>. Due to his father\u2019s profession, he spent his primary school years in different cities. He began his education at <strong>G\u00fclhane Military Medical Faculty<\/strong> in 2003 and graduated from <strong>Ege University<\/strong> Faculty of Medicine in 2010 with the title of Medical Doctor.<\/p><p>In <strong>2010<\/strong>, after ranking 25th in Turkey in the Medical Specialty Examination (TUS), Assoc. Prof. Dr. Berkay Akmaz was admitted to the Department of Ophthalmology and Surgery at <strong>Dr. L\u00fctfi K\u0131rdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital<\/strong> and began his residency. He completed his specialization training in 2014.<\/p><p>Between <strong>2014-2019<\/strong>, he worked as an Ophthalmology Specialist at <strong>Katip \u00c7elebi University<\/strong> Atat\u00fcrk Training and Research Hospital. In 2019, he participated in the \u201cVitreoretinal Surgical Techniques Mini-Fellowship Program\u201d in Germany. Between <strong>2019-2021<\/strong>, he continued his work at Manisa City Hospital.<\/p><p>In <strong>2021<\/strong>, after successfully passing the Chief Assistant Examination, he was appointed as Chief Assistant at the Ophthalmology Clinic of \u0130zmir Bozyaka Training and Research Hospital. In the same year, he was awarded the title of <strong>Associate Professor<\/strong> in the field of Ophthalmology and Surgery by the Council of Higher Education.<\/p><p>After receiving a T\u00dcB\u0130TAK postdoctoral research fellowship, he conducted scientific research for one year as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Wilmer Eye Institute of Johns Hopkins University Hospital in the United States, one of the most advanced research centers in Ophthalmology and Surgery. During this period, he worked in the Cornea, Cataract, Ocular Surface, and Refractive Surgery units and participated in numerous surgical and clinical practices.<\/p><p>In <strong>2017<\/strong>, he successfully passed the European Board Examination held in <strong>Paris<\/strong> and was awarded the <strong>European Board of Ophthalmology Diploma<\/strong> and the <strong>FEBO<\/strong> title.<\/p><p>In <strong>2017<\/strong>, he successfully passed the International Council of Ophthalmology examinations in Optics &amp; Refraction, Basic Sciences, and Clinical Sciences. In <strong>2018<\/strong>, he earned the <strong>FICO<\/strong> (Fellow of International Council of Ophthalmology) title by passing the advanced examination.<\/p><p>He has authored more than 40 scientific articles, translations, book chapters, and editorial works published in national and international peer-reviewed journals. I completed my high school education at Kuleli Military High School. I completed the first 5 years of my medical education between <strong>2003<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>2008<\/strong> at <strong>G\u00fclhane Military Medical Faculty<\/strong>.<\/p><p>I completed the 6th year of my medical education (internship) at <strong>Trakya University<\/strong> Faculty of Medicine and graduated in <strong>2009<\/strong>. While continuing my compulsory service at Ankara G\u00f6lba\u015f\u0131 Ertu\u011frul Gazi Health Center, I ranked 37th in Turkey in the Medical Specialty Examination and began my ophthalmology residency at the Ministry of Health Beyo\u011flu Eye Training and Research Hospital.<\/p><p>Between <strong>2010<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>2014<\/strong>, I completed my specialization training with my thesis titled \u201cThe Effect of Perifoveal Pseudocysts on Anatomical Success in Macular Hole Surgery.\u201d I worked for a short period as an Ophthalmology Specialist at \u00c7erkezk\u00f6y State Hospital. Between <strong>2015<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>2020<\/strong>, I worked as a specialist physician at another major eye hospital in Turkey, the Ministry of Health Ulucanlar Eye Training and Research Hospital. In the same clinic, I was awarded the title of <strong>Associate Professor<\/strong> in Ophthalmology in <strong>2020<\/strong>. Between <strong>2020-2022<\/strong>, I worked at another eye hospital, <strong>Ankara D\u00fcnya Eye Hospital<\/strong>.<\/p><p>During my residency at Beyo\u011flu Eye Hospital, I examined thousands of patients and received training in many refractive procedures such as Clear Lens Surgery, PRK \u2013 Trans-PRK (No Touch) Laser, Femtosecond Laser Flap Surgeries (LASIK), Third Generation Laser Treatment (SMILE), phakic intraocular lens implantation, and secondary intraocular lens implantation.<\/p><p>Since <strong>2016<\/strong>, I have worked as a retina specialist at Ulucanlar Eye Hospital, performing numerous vitreoretinal surgeries including retinal detachment surgery, macular hole and epiretinal membrane surgeries, and vitreous hemorrhage procedures. During this period, I examined and treated thousands of retina patients. In <strong>2018<\/strong>, I received training at the Venice Ophthalmology Summer School led by Prof. Dr. Edoardo Midena.
