1. Prof. Dr. Rıfat Rasier

Prof. Dr. Rıfat Rasier graduated as the second-ranked student from Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 2004. During his medical education and ophthalmology residency, he trained abroad at Louisiana State University School of Medicine in the United States, Städtisches Klinikum Kemperhof Koblenz in Germany, and The Western Eye Hospital, Imperial College, in the United Kingdom.

In 2007, he obtained equivalency from the General Medical Council in the United Kingdom and earned the right to practice medicine with Full Medical Registration. Alongside his ophthalmology training, he completed a master’s program in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University in 2009.

Continuing his professional development without interruption, Rasier completed his ophthalmology residency at Bilim University in 2010. In 2012, he fulfilled his mandatory service at Kırklareli State Hospital. In 2016, he was awarded the title of Associate Professor in the field of Ophthalmology.

In 2017, he completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Boğaziçi University with a GPA of 4.0. As a result of his research at the Biomedical Engineering laboratory of Boğaziçi University, Rıfat Rasier developed a method that enables the incisions made in the cornea during cataract surgery to be sealed with laser at the end of the procedure.

In current cataract operations, incisions are either left open or closed with sutures. Through laser tissue welding experiments, positive results were achieved in closing cataract surgery incisions without stitches using laser. With this system, the incision can be sealed from a distance of 2 millimeters without direct contact with the tissue, using a specific wavelength. The incision was closed with laser assistance without sutures, reducing the risk of infection and shortening the duration of the operation.

This work by Rıfat Rasier was published internationally as a book titled Infrared Lasers for Corneal Tissue Welding.

2. Prof. Dr. Murat Karaçorlu

In 1982, Prof. Dr. Murat Karaçorlu graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine and completed his ophthalmology specialization at the same faculty in 1988. During his residency, he focused on retinal diseases and vitreoretinal surgery, gaining significant experience in this field.

Continuing his career at the Istanbul University Eye Diseases Research Center, Prof. Dr. Karaçorlu is one of the founders of this center and served as deputy director for 12 years. He has held various roles within the Turkish Ophthalmological Association (TOD), including membership in the Central Executive Board and Head of the Surgical Retina Unit. He is also the founder of TOD’s website and a founding member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Proficiency Board (TOYK).

Prof. Dr. Karaçorlu is one of the first surgeons from Turkey to perform live vitreoretinal surgery abroad and has been invited to the “Frankfurt Retina” meetings as both a speaker and live surgery performer. He is also the only speaker invited from Turkey as a Prof. Richard Stein lecturer.

As part of his academic work, Prof. Dr. Karaçorlu has authored numerous national and international publications on retinal diseases and is the author of three original books on “Photodynamic Therapy”, “VEGF”, and “OCT”.

3. Dr. Sinan Göker, MD

In 1982, Dr. Sinan Göker graduated from Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine and completed his ophthalmology specialization in 1988 at the Department of Ophthalmology, Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine. During his residency, he focused on cataract and refractive surgery, gaining advanced knowledge and experience in these fields.

During and after his training, he gained international experience by studying abroad: 6 months at Sarasota Retina Institute in Florida, USA; 2 months at Bellaire Institute of Cataract Surgery in Houston, Texas; and 1 month at Texas Institute of Cataract Surgery in San Antonio. During this period, he foresaw the importance of excimer laser technology in future eye treatments and, upon returning to Turkey, focused his work in this field.

In 1992, he became the first physician in Turkey to perform excimer laser treatment, pioneering refractive surgery in the country. He also performed the first sutureless cataract surgery using ultrasound in Turkey in 1990, and introduced the LASIK method for the treatment of high myopia in 1997. He was among the first physicians in Turkey to perform laser tear duct and glaucoma surgeries.

To date, Dr. Göker has performed nearly 100,000 surgeries and has achieved successful results, particularly in the treatment of high myopia. He achieved a reduction of 30 diopters in one myopic patient and reductions of 20–25 diopters in over a hundred patients. He serves as the Turkey representative of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS) and has been honored with an “Honor Award” by ISRS for his contributions in this field.

His professional affiliations include the Turkish Ophthalmological Association (TOD), Turkish Medical Association, American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and International Society of Refractive Surgery (ISRS).

He is currently actively working at Sinan Göker Eye Group in Şişli, Istanbul.

4. Prof. Dr. Zeki Tunç

In 1985, Prof. Dr. Zeki Tunç graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine and began his specialization in ophthalmology in 1988 at Pierre and Marie Curie University in France. During his training, he worked as a resident at Necker and Laennec Faculty of Medicine hospitals, as well as at the Centre National d’Ophtalmologie des Quinze-Vingts in Paris, gaining extensive knowledge and experience in ophthalmology.

Thanks to his outstanding performance during his residency, he was awarded the title of “Chef de Clinique” at Paris XII University and served as the head of refractive surgery (treatment of myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism). In this role, he carried out significant work in refractive surgery and contributed to the treatment of many patients.

Prof. Dr. Tunç’s areas of interest include cataract, retinal and macular diseases, as well as their surgical treatments. He has particularly focused on cataract surgery and retinal diseases, performing many successful operations in these fields. He has also conducted studies on the effects of diabetes on the eye, as well as on biometry and immersion techniques.

Throughout his academic career, Prof. Dr. Tunç has published numerous articles in national and international journals and continuously updates his knowledge and experience by closely following developments in the field of ophthalmology.

He is currently actively working at his private practice in Şişli, Istanbul.

K. Selim Tüzün was born in Ankara in 1970. He completed his medical education at Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1995, and successfully completed his specialization training as an “Ophthalmology Specialist” at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine in 2000.

2. Dr. Sezer Hacıağaoğlu, MD

Op. Dr. Sezer Hacıağaoğlu graduated from Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 2012. 3. Dr. Leyla Kandur, MD

She was born in Istanbul in 1965. In 1983, she graduated with high honors from American Robert College. In 1989, she graduated from Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine and completed her ophthalmology residency at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine in 1993.

She completed her master’s degree at the Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute in the United States. Between 1993 and 1997, she specialized in cataract, cornea, and laser surgery at the University of California, becoming an eye laser surgeon.

She represented the University of California at numerous international congresses and published her work in highly respected journals. Later, due to her research and medical achievements, she was accepted into the exclusive EyeSTAR Program at the Jules Stein Eye Institute, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

In 1997, Dr. Leyla Kandur founded the EyeSTAR LASIK Institute in Istanbul and, thanks to her outstanding surgical results, became one of the most preferred surgeons worldwide within a few years. She worked at this institute until 2005.

Associate Professor of Ophthalmology, Dr. Berkay Akmaz, was born in İzmir in 1985. Due to his father’s profession, he spent his primary education years in different cities. He began his medical education at Gülhane Military Medical Academy in 2003 and graduated as a Medical Doctor from Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 2010.

7. Dr. Ferşat Muhacir, MD

Dr. Ferşat Muhacir was born in Iran in 1967. After completing his primary and secondary education in Ankara, he enrolled in Çukurova University Faculty of Medicine in 1986 and graduated in 1992. In 1993, he began working as a resident at the Ophthalmology Clinic of 19 Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine. After receiving additional training for 6 months at Gazi University Ophthalmology Clinic in 1996, he earned his specialization in Ophthalmology in 1997.

Following his specialization, he went to the United States and worked as an observer at UCSF (University of California, San Francisco). In 1998, after briefly working as a specialist at Burdur SSK Hospital, he was appointed as an Ophthalmology Specialist at Bucak State Hospital. In 2002, he visited the Netherlands and Austria, where he had the opportunity to work on modern cataract surgery techniques.

Dr. Ferşat Muhacir is a member of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO).

8. Prof. Dr. Yonca Aydın Akova

I graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1983. I completed my specialization in Ophthalmology between 1985 and 1990 at the Department of Ophthalmology of the same faculty. Between 1988 and 1989, I worked for one year in the Cornea Department at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London, United Kingdom.

After my specialization, I received advanced training in the United States: between 1991 and 1992 at the Cornea and Refractive Surgery Department of the Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute, and between 1992 and 1993 at Harvard University, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, focusing on immunological eye diseases and uveitis.

Between 1990 and 1997, I worked in the Cornea Department at Ankara Training and Research Hospital. In 1994, I became an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology. From 1997 to 2012, I served as a faculty member at the Department of Ophthalmology, Başkent University Faculty of Medicine.

In 2000, I was awarded the title of Professor. Between 2003 and 2011, I served as the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the same institution.

I received the TÜBİTAK International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship in 1991–1992, the Eczacıbaşı Research Award in 1995, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology “Achievement Award” in 2011. Between 2012 and 2015, I served as an examiner for the European Board of Ophthalmology exams, and in 2015, I was awarded the title of Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO).

I served as the editor of all three editions of the comprehensive Turkish ophthalmology textbook “Temel Oftalmoloji.” I have also contributed to 12 book chapters and served as a translation editor for 9 English books. I am a member of the editorial board of the Turkish Journal of Ophthalmology and serve as a reviewer for 12 international ophthalmology journals.

My areas of expertise include cornea and ocular surface diseases, cataract, glaucoma, refractive surgery, dry eye, keratoconus, immunological eye diseases, uveitis, and Behçet’s disease. My surgical experience includes more than 15,000 cataract surgeries (including those with multifocal and toric intraocular lenses), femtosecond-assisted cataract surgery, more than 1,000 keratoplasty (corneal transplant) procedures, complex glaucoma surgeries, cross-linking treatment for keratoconus, limbal transplantation, and pterygium surgeries using grafts and adhesives.

1. Prof. Dr. Yonca Aydın Akova

I graduated from Istanbul University Faculty of Medicine in 1983. I completed my ophthalmology specialty training between 1985 and 1990 at the same faculty’s Department of Ophthalmology. Between 1988 and 1989, I worked for one year in the Cornea Department at Londra Moorfields Eye Hospital in the United Kingdom.

After completing my specialty, I undertook advanced training in corneal and refractive surgery at the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University (1991-1992, USA) and in immunological eye diseases and uveitis at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, Harvard University (1992-1993).

Between 1990 and 1997, I worked at the Cornea Department of Ankara Training and Research Hospital. I became an Associate Professor of Ophthalmology in 1994. From 1997 to 2012, I served as a faculty member at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology.

I was promoted to Professor in 2000 and served as the Head of the Department of Ophthalmology at the same institution between 2003 and 2011.

I received the TÜBİTAK Postdoctoral Abroad Scholarship (1991-1992), the Eczacıbaşı Research Award (1995), and the “Achievement Award” from the American Academy of Ophthalmology (2011). Internationally, I am a member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS), American Academy of Ophthalmology, Eucornea, International Uveitis Study Group, International Ocular Inflammation Society, American Uveitis Society, and The Foster Ocular Immunology Society.

I have published over 170 articles in international ophthalmology journals and more than 200 in Turkish peer-reviewed journals, which have been cited over 3,400 times. I have delivered more than 250 presentations and over 30 conference and panel talks internationally. I served as editor for all three editions of the Turkish ophthalmology book Temel Oftalmoloji, contributed 12 book chapters, and acted as translation editor for 9 English books. I am on the editorial board of the Turkish Journal of Ophthalmology and serve as a reviewer for 12 international ophthalmology journals.

2. Prof. Dr. Zeynep Aktaş

I was born in 1978 in Ankara. Between 1995 and 2001, I completed my medical education at Gazi University Faculty of Medicine and started working as a research assistant at the Department of Ophthalmology in the same faculty that year.

After completing my training, I finished my ophthalmology specialty in April 2006 with a thesis titled “Apoptosis in Retina and Optic Nerve in the Endothelin-1 Ischemia Model and the Neuroprotective Effect of Brimonidine.” I then completed my mandatory service in Kızılcahamam from 2006 to 2008. Between 2009 and 2010, I worked in the private sector. In 2009, I spent one month at the Glaucoma Department of New York Eye and Ear Infirmary as a clinical observer with Prof. Dr. Robert Ritch. In 2010, I began working as a lecturer in the glaucoma unit at the Department of Ophthalmology, Gazi University, where I completed my specialty, focusing extensively on glaucoma research thereafter.

Between 2013 and 2014, I worked at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology, glaucoma unit, on a project titled “Effects of Proteasome Inhibition on Lentiviral Vector Transduction in the Aqueous Outflow System of Monkeys” with TÜBİTAK funding, collaborating with Prof. Dr. Paul L. Kaufman on various gene therapy studies for glaucoma. During this period, I participated in clinical activities and laboratory research at the same clinic.

Upon returning to the Department of Ophthalmology at Gazi University, my studies from Wisconsin, including “Effects of Proteasome Inhibition on Lentiviral Vector Transduction in Human Trabecular Meshwork Cells and Monkey Anterior Segment Organ Culture: A New Approach in Glaucoma Gene Therapy” and “A New Gene Therapy Method in Glaucoma: Canaloplasty,” were awarded first place for best oral and poster presentations by the Turkish Ophthalmology Society.

In 2014, I was promoted to Assistant Professor, and in 2015, I successfully passed the Associate Professorship examination. In 2015, I passed the European Board of Ophthalmology exam in Paris and earned the title “Fellow of European Board of Ophthalmology (FEBO).” In 2016, I was selected by the Turkish Ophthalmology Society for the European Leadership Development Program (EuLDP) Turkey representative and completed modules in Austria, the USA, and Europe. In 2020, I was awarded the title Fellow of Glaucoma Surgery (FGS) by the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery, of which I am a member.

Primarily focusing on glaucoma, I have published over 50 scientific papers in international journals and more than 40 in national journals. I have presented over 40 papers at international congresses and over 100 papers at national congresses. I have served as an invited speaker or official at more than 60 national and international meetings and participated in numerous live surgical demonstrations and courses.

I am an active member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Society (TOD), the Glaucoma Unit of the Turkish Ophthalmology Society, the European Glaucoma Society (EGS), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery (ISGS), where I also serve on the Associate Advisory Board.

I currently provide services at my private clinic located in Ankara Yenimahalle.

3. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yasin Şakir Göker

I was born in 1984 in Ankara. I completed my high school education at Kuleli Military High School. I completed the first five years of my medical education between 2003 and 2008 at Gülhane Military Medical Academy.

During the 6th year of my medical education, my internship, I trained at Trakya University Faculty of Medicine and graduated in 2009. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Akman graduated from TED Ankara College in 1985 and received his Medical Doctor degree from Hacettepe University English Faculty of Medicine in 1991. He completed his Ophthalmology specialty training at Hacettepe University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Ophthalmology in 1995.

He has served at the Department of Ophthalmology at Başkent University Faculty of Medicine since its establishment, earning the title of Associate Professor in 2000 and Professor of Ophthalmology in 2007. He conducted glaucoma studies at Duke University in North Carolina, USA.

1. Dr. Ferşat Muhacir, MD

Dr. Ferşat Muhacir was born in Iran in 1967. After completing his primary and secondary education in Ankara, he entered the Faculty of Medicine at Çukurova University in 1986 and graduated in 1992. In 1993, he began working as a resident at the Eye Clinic of 19 Mayıs University Faculty of Medicine. After completing six months of training at the Eye Clinic of Gazi University in 1996, he received his Ophthalmology Specialist title in 1997.

I was born in Sivas in 1974 and graduated from Istanbul Kabataş High School for Boys in 1991. In 2002, I completed my residency training at the Department of Ophthalmology, Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine, and became an Ophthalmology Specialist.

Op. Dr. Sedat Selim graduated from the Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 2004. He began his specialization training in 2004 and completed it in 2009. He received his specialization training at Ege University.

After completing his specialization training, he fulfilled his mandatory service at Burdur Bucak State Hospital. Until 2014, he worked for 2 years at Atatürk Training and Research Hospital affiliated with Izmir Katip Çelebi University.

He worked at Bolu Training and Research Hospital until 2016. From 2016 to 2019, he served at Çiğli Regional Training Hospital.

He speaks English, French, and Balkan languages fluently. He is a member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association and the Turkish Medical Association.

7. Dr. Ebru Acar, MD

Op. Dr. Ebru Acar was born in Uşak in 1975. She graduated from the Ankara University Faculty of Medicine in 1999. She completed her specialization training at Izmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2004.

After completing her specialization training, she worked at Kars State Hospital. Between 2007 and 2018, she worked respectively at Private Karşıyaka Eye Hospital, Private Egepol Hospital, and Private Ekol Eye Hospital.

She is a member of the Turkish Ophthalmology Association and the Turkish Medical Association.

Since 2018, she has been providing medical services to her patients at her private clinic in Karşıyaka Mavibahçe.

8. Dr. Ali Türker, MD

Op. Dr. Ali Türker was born in Izmir in 1972. He completed his medical education at the Ege University Faculty of Medicine in 1996. He completed his specialization training at Izmir Atatürk Training and Research Hospital in 2002.

After completing his specialization training, he worked for one year at Izmir Alsancak State Hospital. He then worked at Net Göz Medical Center for 14 years between 2005 and 2019.

Since 2019, he has been providing medical services to his patients at his private clinic in Alsancak, Izmir.
